    About Writer

Esmahan Aykol was born in 1970 in Edirne, Turkey. She studied law at the University of Istanbul and at the Humboldt University in Berlin. While studying, she also worked as a journalist for various Turkish newspapers and radio broadcasters. Later, together with a friend, she opened a bar in Istanbul, which soon went out of business. The friend then opened a bookshop and Esmahan Aykol wrote a novel which became a storming bestseller, not only in the friend’s bookshop, but across the whole of Turkey: “Hotel Bosporus” (2001). The heroine of her novels is Kati Hirschel, a German-Turkish bookseller specialised in crime stories, who ends up becoming a detective herself. Aykol writes her books in Turkish, but revises thoroughly the German translations before they are printed. The author, who lives in both Istanbul and Berlin, has recently shifted her full geographical focus to Turkey.
