Political scientist, social and cultural anthropologist Schmidinger was born in Austria in 1974. Since 1998, he has been in education positions in the Middle East countries. He is currently a lecturer in the Institute of Political Science at the University of Vienna, and the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences.
He is a member of LEEZA (a relief organization active in Turkey and Iraq) and the Board of Directors of the Critical Anti-Semitism Studies Society. Schmidinger is also the Secretary-General of the Austrian Kurdish Studies Association, and an editorial board member of the Kurdische Studien and Kurdish Studies journals. He was the President of the IG Externe Lektorinnen und freire WissenschafterInnen University Professors Union between 2009 and 2010, and has been a member of the Senate of the University of Vienna since 2010.
His book Krieg und Revolution in Syrisch-Kurdistan: Analysen und Stimmen aus Rojava, published by Yordam Kitap in Turkish as Türkiye Kürdistanı'nda Savaş ve Devrim, was granted the Mazlum Bagok Kurdish Journalism Prize.
