Book Season Begins
The 33rd International Istanbul Book Fair will open at the TÜYAP Fair and Convention Center on Saturday, November 8
Organized by TÜYAP Fairs in partnership with the Publishers Association of Turkey, the 33rd International Istanbul Book Fair will be held between November 8 and 16, 2014 at the TÜYAP Fair and Convention Center, Büyükçekmece.
The fair brings together 850 publishers and non-governmental organizations from Turkey and around the world, and will host 300 events including interviews, panels, children’s events and recitals.
Atilla Dorsay and 100 Years of Turkish Cinema
The theme for the 33rd International Istanbul Book Fair will be “100 Years of Turkish Cinema” in celebration of the centennial of Turkish Cinema. The Writer of Honor is Atilla Dorsay, and the fair includes a large number of interviews, panels, music recitals and exhibitions that witness the century-long journey of cinema in Turkey.
A number of panel discussions will be held with leading actors, directors and writers on the life, work and film critique of Attila Dorsay. Fifty events throughout the fair will be based on the cinema theme.
An exhibition organized by TÜYAP and designed by Sadık Karamustafa, titled “Atilla Dorsay: A Life in Color Cinemascope” will include selections from the life and works of Writer of Honor Attila Dorsay.
Guest of Honor Hungary: From One Garden to the Other

This year’s Guest of Honor is Hungary, a very close guest. The motto of the event will be “From One Garden to the Other” in reference to the poem by Nazım Hikmet, and events will focus on promoting Hungarian culture to Turkish visitors in the International Hall (Hall 1) between November 8 and 11, 2014. Guests include the leading writers of Hungary such as Péter Esterházy, László Darvas, Dóra Csányi, Katalin Szegedi, Péter Zilahy, Tóth Krisztina, Spiró György, Mihály Hoppál, Timur Davletov, Fodor Pál, Dávid Géza and Zsofia Mautner.
The opening of the Hungarian pavilion will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014 by the Hungarian Minister of Human Resources of Cultural Affairs, Dr. Zoltán Balog. The Hungarian music group Cimbaliband will entertain visitors with Central and Eastern European tunes.
The International Hall will feature 91 publishers from 35 countries including Guest of Honor Hungary between November 8th and 11th.
TÜYAP pays homage to Gabriel Garcia Marquez
The Embassy of Colombia will hold a number of Gabriel Garcia Marquez remembrance events during the fair. On Saturday, November 15th, 2014, an event titled “The Life and Work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the Perspective of the Turkish People of Marquez Literature” will be held by Jaime Abello, General Director of the Ibero-American New Journalism Foundation, and Turkish author Seçkin Selvi.
International Guests of the Fair
A number of prominent foreign writers will be hosted by the Istanbul Book Fair throughout the nine days. Guests include screenwriter and author Petros Markaris, Polish author Janusz Glowacki, critic and film historian Philip Kemp; bestselling thriller writer Tess Geritsen and Gleen Meade, and translator and author Maureen Freely. A total of 40 foreign writers will join the events during the fair.
New in the Fair: Music and Cuisine
Since this year’s theme is dedicated to cinema, visitors will be greeted with familiar sounds. The recitals in the foyer area on Saturday, November 8th, Tuesday, November 11th, and Saturday, November 15th will consist of the soundtracks of unforgettable Turkish films.
Another new aspect of the Istanbul Book Fair will be the “Cuisine” that will be open between November 8 and 11 in the International Hall. The program for the Cuisine will include interactive cooking shows and talks with gourmet writers. The famous Hungarian cooking show host and writer Zsofia Mautner will share her secrets for the most delectable local recipes.
TÜYAP has a rich program for young readers this year. A total of 57 events including interviews, readings and workshops for different age groups are planned for weekday visitors.
Change in Visiting Hours
The 33rd International Istanbul Book Fair will be open between 10 am and 7 pm during the week and between 10 am and 8 pm on the weekend. Admission is free for students, teachers, pensioners and disabled persons, and regular admission is TL 5.
The 33rd International Istanbul Book Fair will be held concurrently with the 24th Istanbul Art Fair-ARTIST 2014.
